A dental emergency is any kind of oral pain that can’t wait until normal business hours. This can range anywhere from a toothache to a broken tooth to any kind of trauma to the mouth. At Sedro Woolley Family Dental Center, we get dental emergency patients for various reasons that are avoidable or can be prevented through good oral hygiene.
The most common dental emergencies are:
CHIPPED OR CRACKED TEETH
When a tooth becomes chipped or cracked, it’s at risk for further damage. The tooth enamel may be compromised, which leaves you more vulnerable to decay. If bacteria seep into the cracked tooth, it can damage the pulp, which may lead to an infection.
If a tooth is chipped, try to save it if you can. Handle it carefully and avoid chewing or biting down on it. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. You can also use dental wax to cover any sharp edges.
If a tooth is cracked, call your dentist as soon as possible. The nature of the crack will determine the proper course of action. Minor cracks may only require monitoring, while large cracks may require a dental crown.
BROKEN OR LOST FILLINGS
A broken or lost filling can be painful, but it’s not always a dental emergency.
If the filling comes out, avoid eating on the tooth until the area can be cleaned and restored. The exposed area may be sensitive to heat and cold. This sensitivity can last for several days.
If the filling falls out, call your dentist right away. The filling can be replaced, but only for a short period of time. If the filling falls out, your tooth may become hypersensitive to temperature.
KNOCKED-OUT TEETH
If a permanent tooth is knocked out, time is an important factor. The sooner the tooth is reinserted, the better chance there is of saving the tooth. If your tooth gets knocked out, follow these steps:
- Find the tooth and rinse it in water, but avoid scrubbing.
- Hold the tooth in place in the socket with gauze or a clean washcloth. If this is hard for you to do, then hold the tooth by crow carefully, watch it, and put it in a milk container.
- Seek immediate care to reinsert the tooth and repair the tissue possibly.
ABSCESSED TEETH
Sometimes, bacteria can get trapped underneath the gum line and cause an infection. This is commonly known as an abscessed tooth. They’re often painful and can cause swelling of the face, jaw, or neck. In such a case, immediately seek medical attention.
OBJECTS CAUGHT BETWEEN TEETH
When something gets stuck between your teeth, you might feel panicky. It’s natural to want to try to get it out yourself. However, your safest bet is to visit your dentist. They can safely remove the object without causing damage.
