What Are Pediatric Dental Crowns?

Pediatric dental crowns are designed specifically for primary baby teeth. They are usually made of stainless steel, as the crown will only be needed until the baby tooth falls out naturally. Pediatric crowns protect and restore baby teeth that are severely damaged or decayed to treat with a filling. By safeguarding the decayed primary tooth, we can ensure the proper development of adult teeth and create a healthier smile for your child.

What Problems Can Pediatric Dental Crowns Treat?

Most often, pediatric dental crowns are used to treat widespread cavities or repair a tooth damaged by an infection and were restored with a pulpotomy. They cover up and protect the entire tooth structure and help strengthen the tooth after severe decay.

Children can easily damage their teeth during accidents or playing sports. A crown may be needed to conceal cracked, broken, or chipped teeth.

A crown can restore a damaged tooth’s shape and function and help your child smile, chew, and bite normally again. It will be protected entirely as your child’s mouth continues to grow until their adult teeth begin to emerge.

What Is the Process for the Placement of Dental Crowns?

The process of dental crown placement includes the following:

  • Local Anesthesia

A pediatric dental crown process begins by meticulously cleaning and numbing the affected area with local anesthesia. If required, your child can also be sedated during this process to help them feel more safe and comfortable throughout their treatment.

  • Filing and Removing Decay

To prepare for the crown, we will carefully remove any decayed or damaged enamel from their tooth. Using a dental drill, we will carefully remove all damaged tooth material and shape the tooth into a robust and steady platform to which the crown can be attached.

  • Crown Placement

Crowns for baby teeth are generally made of stainless steel and come in pre-designed sizes. We will select a perfect-sized crown to cover the remaining tooth structure of their baby tooth completely. It will then be secured using dental cement, concluding the treatment.
